I primarily fish up in the northeast around Massachusetts and Maryland. I'd probably say that my favorite species is striped bass with a fly. rod. There are a lot of flats out here that you wade out into and striped bass are a blast to catch on an 8 wt fly rod.
I'm hoping to spend a bit more time fly fishing for trout this spring in NH and VT so am open to tips if people have any.
nymphing is usually most productive, but its hard to beat the thrill of topwater bites! you can even strip streamers for bigger trout. match the hatch and youll be golden.
For dry flies id start with a hatch chart and throw whatever I see on the river. 3-5wt
For nymphing, indicator rig or euro style tightlining. 3-5wt
For streamers/swinging, whatever pattern resembles the baitfish should put you on. 5-8wt depending on streamer length/weight
good luck out there!
@Kelly Weber any recommended 5wt rods that won’t break the bank? Sounds like 5wt is the rod to have if I only have one trout rod.
@DB37 5wt is a good all around rod thats light enough for a ton of species. Personally I just picked up a TFO BVK 8'6" 5wt, upgrading from a chinese amazon special I started fly fishing with maybe 4 years ago.
TFO, Echo, and Redington rods are my go to recommendations for rods with very good price/performance. you can get a rod for $130-270ish is their MSRP.
The rods I've personally had success from them:
TFO BVK
TFO Signature II
Echo ION XL
Redington Vice
Hello everyone!
I am on the east coast, currently North Carolina. I primarily fish freshwater. Catfish, shad and bass fishing are my favorite. I also enjoy fishing offshore for kings and mahi. Recently I have tried my hand at fishing for trout and red fish. I have never tried fly fishing, but would definitely like to give it a try sometime.
@Sam Culbertson hey Sam! I’m a little biased but I always recommend chasing fish on the fly! Might even be in NC this year taking a friend out fly fishing for sharks. If you have questions on getting started just let me know, I’d be glad to point you in the right direction
Hey dudes. I live down in Texas, NW of Houston. I fish primarily saltwater, chasing redfish, trout, and flounder. I also dabble in freshwater when its been too long between saltwater trips. I usually wade fish the salt, but recently bought an Indian River Canoe Sportsman so I can take one of my two boys out with me.
Hey Kurt! thats awesome! TX has a lot of lunker largemouth
