I was looking at the calendar trying to figure out a time too. I am out of town for work next week, then the wife is out of town the week after. Looking like the week AFTER Thanksgiving would be best if we want to do a week night. If people want to do the weekend I would definitely suggest coming out west. Could do a hike on part of the Appalachian Trail and then hit one of the breweries nearby.
On a week night I would be up for Port City, never been but like their beer.
@Charlie Caldwell I'm down for hiking the Appalachian trail for a day then a brewery. I can probably convince my wife to come along - I'll text you when I get back from Guantanamo and we can plan a time. Anyone else interested?
I was actually planning to do a Shenandoah/Appalachian Trail hike on the 20th as well--I usually do one every year on Veteran's Day but this year something came up so I'm looking at the 20th.
I was planning on either climbing Old Rag or taking the trail to Mary's Rocks. Both offer some fun bouldering and epic views. Let me know if anyone has a preference, or if there are other options that might be better.
@dan.dewit Let me know more details about the 20th and I'll see if I can convince my wife to go. We've moved onto our next house 'project' aka renovating the basement so I can't promise anything, but would love to make a hike (and beer after!).
So in a search for a trail that isn't too popular (and thus crowded), while still being decently tough, I'm thinking of going with the Hazel River Falls Loop (map below). I'm planning on getting to the Meadow Spring parking lot (see the Google Earth screenshot) around 0900, again in hope of beating any crowds.
The full loop is both pretty long and has a fair amount of elevation loss and gain, so I plan to take the north branch of the loop when it first forks off, take that as far as the eastern edge before it curves back, and see how much time I'm making before deciding whether to press through the full loop or turn back.
Regardless of the route it will still probably be at least 3-4 hours on the trail,so if you decide to join, definitely bring a day pack with chow, water, and warming layers (looking at a high of 47 on the 20th). I'll have a trail medkit and a GPS locator beacon with SOS capability, but given that we'll be on the trails and always pretty close to major roads, I doubt we'll have any issues.
Please feel free to hit me up at (202) 527-5702 or at dan.dewit@gmail.com if you're interested in joining want to coordinate more directly.
Hey @dan.dewit I won't make it this weekend, but my wife and I go hiking all the time, so we definitely would like to go. We started renovations on our basement and one of the contractors is coming by this Saturday, sadly I have to be here. I'll definitely let you know when a weekend opens up.

I can’t do the morning that day. Driving back from NC for a buddy’s retirement (yeah I’m that old)
